Should we call House?

Day 10

I am still in hospital and still in Acute Admissions Unit (AAU) and I am waiting to for a bed in GI Ward. This morning I was quite low and this got better as the day progresses and now I am feeling that I should have gone home. There is the little problem with the fact I am nil by mouth, I have a drip and IV antibiotics, and a catheter. The other small matter is a fistula.

Going outside to the contrast dye CT and X-ray I think this was the difference, being in bed all the time is very debilitating and drains the brain and confidence. Now I plan to bring my attachments and do as many loops of the ward as I am able, if I can get to go outside I will or at least near the doors.

There are no further judgements from the doctors. The consultant surgeon and radiologist can see a hole in my stomach and this is what is causing the leak from my bowels and it is coming out through my surgical scar. There was no surgery in this leaking area and they have no idea what caused it. Obviously it needs to be fixed and they are reluctant to open me up again. So they are asking other surgeons to see if they can help. We will wait and see. Still no results from the biopsy.

My visiting hours are 3-8 and my mother and brother are coming on Sunday and the girls are coming from London this weekend. Lucia and Andrew Dunlop want to drop in on the week end too. Let me know times please.

I can only have 2 at once.

When I came into hospital I was 10st 13lb and I was weighed today 11st 1lb! How does this work? I have a 500gm tumour taken out, and do not eat for 10 days and I gain 2lb. No exercise and fluid!

  1. No justice!! Thinking of you a lot. If a strange t-shirt arrives for you at home, ignore it! A mistake on my part.
    Lots of love , Angie

  2. Bugger, Bugger, Bugger poor you!!! I know a little of what you feel from my 6 weeks in hospital plus 3 ops when I had the twins all those years ago but I was younger! The weight gain is almost certainly due to water retention which is very common after major surgery in the stomach region. I lost as much as 4K in 48 hours as I began to recover and spent a ridiculous amount of time on a bed pan and the nurses insisted on measuring everything, I still have the stretch marks today! Hospital cabin fever is another thing and difficult to cope with but the more movement you can take even if its just up to the nurses station and back is very positive and will make you feel better. After Issy Scoliosis surgery I helped walk her daily up the ward pushing all her drips along beside her at least once a day, all the other patients in for hip replacements etc who where much older than her used to clap her and congratulate her as she got stronger each day. She was in hospital for almost 3 weeks but determination is half the battle. You might want to invest in a shower stool for when you get home, they are very inexpensive and Gods send, the hospital should be able to arrange one for you. I will speak to Andrew tonight and arrange a time to visit on Saturday, probably earlier rather than later if that is OK with you. Keep your chin up Lxxx

  3. The visiting hours are strictly 3-8 and I believe no exceptions. I have moved to millennium building level 9a, bay 7, bed 4 with a view. …. of a multi story car park!
